Love of all kinds is a main theme of AI: The Somnium Files. A prominent character, Peter, is gay and in a relationship with Renju Okiura, another man. The relationship is only explicitly referenced in one branch of the game, but is relevant in other branches. The protagonist, Date, is a client of an "LGBT-friendly bar" owned by a trans woman, Mama.

The game also includes an aroace character, Saito, but this representation is problematic as the character is a serial killer who started killing to 'feel something'.
