Analogue: A Hate Story explores gender roles and representation of gender. Hyun-ae's path allows her to develop an attraction to the player-character, even without knowing their gender, which implies that she is pansexual. One respondent to the Queer Representation (2016) survey mentioned that they found this representation of pansexuality particularly interesting and wondered why more people didn't discuss it.

Another respondent mentioned that it is possible to play as a gender nonbinary character in the sequel, Hate Plus, provided you play without New Game+. Unfortunately, even after following these instructions, the player-character is still referred to with he/him pronouns by one of the NPCs.
