The protagonist of Being Ourselves is trans, and the rules state that this role should be played by a cis person. Similarly, the 'ally' character is cis, and should be played by a trans character. The game is about the ally leading the protagonist through their transition, using their personal experience to give insights. The ally helps the protagonist to reach 'transition milestones' and life goals, and discuss barriers that might be faced along the way, to the extent that the ally feels comfortable.
