'Firemen' in Harvester seem to be used as a metaphor for gay men. When Steve buys a pornographic magazine, the woman in the store tells him that its a healthy interest, as it 'steers [men] away from being a fireman'. In the fire station, the firemen are seen sketching a male model, and the firemen are also described as 'effeminate' within the title.
