Representation in Undertale is diverse, but difficult to discuss without spoiling the narrative. The game features a prominent same-gender relationship, as well as characters who can be considered nonbinary or at least ambiguous, as their genders are never confirmed. Undertale is worthy of deeper exploration for a number of reasons, including its approach to representation.

In the Queer Representation (2016) survey, Undertale featured as the game with the most popular use of pronouns in the way that Frisk and Chara are referred to consistently with they/them pronouns by other characters. Their gender ambiguity may not be as strong as canonical nonbinary gender representation, but their representation in Undertale has still been taken by many gender non-conforming players as significant, as they can identify with it.

Undertale's representation of same-gender relationships through the bond that forms between Undynne and Alphys was also considered important by respondents because of the relationship's organic, realistic formation, as well as the positive, unique representation of each of the women involved in the relationship.
