Jess' Queer Games Journey

Good Knight Story

An armoured figure approaches a frowning slime creature with one eye. Several symbols are beneath them, including lightning, a shield, a love heart, skulls, ice crystals, and flames.

So you’re a Knight with dreams of saving the princess and defeating evil, only you had a really rough night and got yourself into some trouble. It’s a fun premise for what is essentially a match three game with a little twist.

Game of Thrones: Ascent

A medieval castle and several buildings are overlayed by a game interface. A character portrait is next to the name 'Lord Simon Stonetree', who is level 145. Quest information reads, 'Volume 5, chapter 1: A wolf in sheep's clothing, I'll be there, Deadly cargo, Cycle of rebirth'. A menu reads, 'Tales event, tales of ice and fire, the dragon queen. Buildings, friends, shop, character, power, messages, alliance, daily news, options'.

Based on the TV show, GoT: Ascent is a resource management game. You start the game in a heterosexual marriage (or recently bereaved) and one way or another you move onto managing your kingdom. The goal is to accrue resources (in the form of people, materials or currency) and use them to build up your empire until you are the strongest force in Westeros. Or… okay, I’m not sure you could get that far, but you can dream big.

Astoria: Fate's Kiss

Two femme looking people in bathing suits cuddling each other.

So, Astoria is a mobile visual novel in which you choose your romantic partner from a bunch of Greek Gods. You’re an agent for H.E.R.A (which stands for something that I don’t remember, but think of it as like the Men in Black of gods) and you’re assigned to manage dramatic case for one of the gods (or monsters), and… the rest is fate. Well, I assume, anyway.

Seduce Me

Two femme looking people standing in a room full of tables. Another femme looking person next to dialogue reading 'What's so interesting about talking about guys? It's not like any of us are going to get boyfriends soon.'.

This one had me offside from the beginning, sadly. A girl’s grandfather passes away and bequeaths her his house in his will, so naturally she moves into the mansion alone the next day. When she arrives, however, she finds a group of incubi squatting in the home, quickly befriends them, and… hijinks ensue?

Rising Angels: Reborn

Two gender ambiguous people with wings. Femme looking person next to dialogue reading 'Huh? Why would it upset me? Love is love.'.

If I was going to choose any character in a spaceship crew to play, an academically-focused strategic officer going on her first mission would be pretty high up on my list. This visual novel granted my wishes by putting me in the shoes of Natalie Puccile – and it was great fun trying to help her guide her team through an exploration gone wrong.
